Whats the best free Web Hosting site?

Question by mgdagent79: Whats the best free Web Hosting site?
I am looking for a proven free web hosting site. I am planning on buying my domain from godaddy (as i have gone through them in the past and been pleased). I am thinking about using them for hosting as well, but i was noticing that there are MANY free hosting sites with no ads. Im just going to have a very casual business, more of a hobby. Any suggestions?
Has anyone used Microsoft Office Live Small Business?

I’ve never used Office Live Small Business, but know some that have. It’s a good free service and you get site traffic reports and contact management which might be good for your business needs. The FAQ says you can redirect an existing domain.

They’re not free, but dirt cheap.

P.S. – Everyone I know that used GoDaddy had problems, I’d stay away.

If you are planning to use free hosting with registered domain, first you have to choose the free hosting site that allows Addon domain feature. I suggest you to use freesite2you, this free hosting site allows free hosting with much features and also provide free Addon domain. You can use more than one registered domain as a separate site each in their Addon domain feature.

The key word you mentioned is “business.” Hobby sites frequently become full fledged businesses because of the rich content. They are the best kind of site to have if you want to make money. If you are just blogging about your hobby then use a web service, not a web host. Blogger.com is a Google product that has excellent multi platform export features in case you decide to upgrade later to a real web host or simply change services.

One critical detail you left out of your question is what web building software you plan to use. Since you didn’t mention one, I am going to have to assume you are wanting a web host that offers the site builder free of charge also.

In direct answer to your question, the best free web hosting site is the one that has specs meeting your needs. There are no proven free web hosting sites that I know of, except Host Gator, which offers free (grants) to non profits. Specs that have to be considered are minion such as what is the version of PHP, amount of bandwidth, amount of storage space versus the amount you need, how many static IP ‘s needed, security track record, etc. In other words, you are asking a question that would take up an entire blog post or article to write. If you are startng a business, the best web host IS NOT A FREE one. Trust me.

If you have no clue about what I am talking about then let me put it simply, you have two choices –
    1. learn the hard way by hosting free and then later, when your business is booming, spending hundreds to thousands of dollars later to recreate your site elsewhere
    OR
    2. Choose an excellent local web host that is inexpensive and that you can stay with long term.

In case you are thinking, “well, I am not making any money right now or this is just a hobby right now,” the problem with choice one is that you will become a prisoner of that host unless you have the money to pay someone to move your site or the knowledge to do it yourself. Since you are asking for free I assume you wouldn’t want to pay anyone to move your site. Moving a site is not a simple process. If you use a “site builder” then you are a prisoner forever of that “free” host. I have been using hosts since 1991. That’s 20 years of testing numerous hosts. If you have a simple blog that you rarely post to, no problem. If you have a business site that you depend on to make money, then run as fast as you can from free web hosting.

I personally endorse and use Host Gator for not only my own site but for hundreds of sites my partners and I develop for small businesses. Frequently small businesses realize they need dedicated hosting for security purposes and when they are ready for that, I don’t have to switch hosts to upgrade them. My primary reason for using Host Gator is that they have a real telephone number with a live, English speaking U.S. resident on the other end of the line and it is extremely rare that I ever hold longer than a minute to have my call answered. They also offer all the major web building systems free such as Joomla and WordPress.

Have a look at my website and you will see that I endorse NO OTHER host. Be wary of anyone who refers to multiple web hosts like bloggers who “review” 10 or more services. I endorse only the host that I consider to be the best. That is the only way I can avoid backlash and keep my reputation clean. Everyone that has signed up through me has been 100% satisfied. I have had zero complaints. I have upgraded my account to reseller to offer service to all my design clients because I am that confident that I won’t get complaints.

If you decide to go with Host Gator simply visit my site listed below in the source box and click on the image of the alligator on the left side of the home page. Their lowest account is $ 4 a month I believe or you can get it cheaper paying by the year.

NOTE: Regarding Microsoft Office Live Small Business – its not free as it appears to be on the surface and will be expensive in the long run. You know what they say “If it looks too good to be true,…” Microsoft also charges you for the domain name ($ 14/year) 1and1.com charges $ 4.99. HostGator’s cheapest account offers unlimited storage and bandwidth versus MS Office’s limited 1 GB storage. Bandwidth is not even mentioned on their site and that is really frightening. They will end up holding your account hostage if you exceed these limits and refuse to upgrade to a pay account. This is a common with sites that have photos or videos.
